SxS Card – Lifespan/cycle count
Hi All,
Just trying to figure out how many cycles I have left on my SxS cards…
I’m using a Sony SxS USB card reader/writer on a mac with os x 10.6.8. I installed XDCAM browser 2.1 but no luck. Any thoughts on how I would get this to work?

I’m not sure if you’re supposed to use the camera to tell you this info or it’s computer software, but in any event the SxS Pro cards are good for 100,000 cycles and the SxS-1 cards are good for 10,000 cycles. If you are getting close to the end of the life of a pro card then your camera has probably turned to dust by now, anyway 😉

Thanks for the quick response, Don. Unfortunately I just have this Sony card reader/writer.
Anyone have any software solutions, I’m stuck. 🙁

Okay, it turns out no model cameras or software can currently measure cycles for pro-cards. Some cameras can measure sxs1 though.

I can see why there would be interest in having available cycling data for SxS-1 but not for SxS Pro. Even if you cycled an SxS-1 card 5 times a day every day it would take over 5 years of use before the card became unusable.

The EX1R can display the life percentage of SxS cards if you press the DISPLAY BATT INFO button underneath the handle. Use the joystick to scroll through the screens until you arrive at the battery/card life screen.

No – my apologies back at ya’ — I should’ve figured that out! And it’s good to know that the Status button had more to it than I realized.
The good news is that my cards have plenty of life left in them. The bad news is that they’ll probably be obsolete long before they stop working. At least I didn’t buy the more-expensive variety of SxS card.

The Life cycle could be an indication of something wrong with the card if it was particularly low based on your usage. I’d rather have access to this information if it was available.Ronan Quinn
