Hi all. First off, I’m editing on a Mac-based Media Composer, V5.5.2.

I’m trying to ingest footage that was recorded to SxS cards and can’t get the Avid to recognize it. The info I’ve gathered through Quicktime (which also can’t open them) on the clips is this:

    MPEG-4 Video, 1920X1080, Linear PCM, 16 Bit, big-endian signed integer, 2 channels, 48,000 kHz.

I’m assuming I need a separate application to open these files and then convert to an Avid friendly format, but not sure what that app might be.

If anyone has any ideas on how to deal with this footage, I would love to hear from you. Thanks!

YOu need to use AMA to access this footage. This is XDCAM EX footage. For that you need to install the XDCAM AMA plugin:

    https://avid.custkb.com/avid/app/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=394827

That link also has workflow guides for XDCAM.

Thanks Shane. I wasn’t aware this was XDCam footage since it wasn’t shot on an XDCam camera. I guess it’s a Sony thing.

    I appreciate your help!!

What was it shot on? SxS cards are used in XDCAM EX cameras. I don’t know of another camera that shoots to that type of card.

[Shane Ross] “I don’t know of another camera that shoots to that type of card.”

The Alexa records to SxS, and it looks like JVC has an adapter that records .mp4 files to it:

Perhaps this is where the footage came from? I’m not sure if Avid has an AMA for it, though. Can you do a straight import? Is the SxS card recognized by your computer?

It was shot on a Sony F3.

Yep. The F3 records in the XDCAM EX format on SxS cards. You do need that AMA plugin and all should work. If you haven’t figured that out already.

If you still have the files in a BPAV folder, you can also use Sony Clip Browser to export the file to mxf and use AMA with those files, or import those into MC. Actually even if they’re orphaned files you can still rebuild the BPAV folders (do a search for the procedure).

This from Chepal in Germany, regarding rebuilding BPAV folder structure from orphaned files:
    in clip_browser
_file_import_choose your mp4s and they will appear in the top left window
_in the bottom left window direct to the area you want to be in and create a new folder_select it

_drag your mp4s from the top window to the bottom

_look at the folder on your hard drive and you would find it has created
new folder_BPAV_and all the stuff it needs.
