Trying to make a grungy light flickering effect.

Is there a quick way to switch the opacity on and off (without multiple key frames) or to cut frames out of the timeline to get a flickering of my light.

I can create this effect duplicating frames and putting spaces in between them but surely there is a better way?

you can use a wiggle expression on the opacity to simulate a flicker

check out Dan Ebbert’s guide to wiggle:

    The simplest expression would be:

    wiggle(x,y)

x would be the number of wiggles per second, whereas y would be amount of opacity (0-100).

To apply this expression….highlight the layer and hit T (transparency), then alt-click the stopwatch next to the opacity of the layer. Now type in the wiggle above changing the x and y to your numbers…..

    Hope this helps…

Even a simple loop expression added to a few keyframes you’ve already created would help.
Option/Alt click the stopwatch. Click the triangle in the expression area and choose property>loopOut(type = “cycle”, numKeyframes = 0) OR loopOutDuration(type = “cycle”, duration = 0)
Your first and last keyframe generally need to be identical.

For flicker I would use a LoopOut expression on four or five hold keyframes with varying spaces to get the grungy bad signal feel. A Wiggle has quite a smooth feel and interference tends to be more erratic.

A random expression would be more erratic, but of course harder to control than a wiggle expression. Also, if the wiggle frequency is high enough, then it would not feel all that smooth because there would not be enough time between wiggles for interpolation.

If you´re uncomfortable with expressions, there is another way.

Under stylize there is an effect called “strobe light”. It works pretty well.
