February 19, 2007 at 4:40 pmI don’t think it’s that difficult to switch from any NLE to another. You just need to learn where “all the buttons are” and the appropriate workflow. One thing for sure, Avid is not FCP and FCP is not Avid, you’ll need to adjust your workflow to fit FCP.

FCP’s 3 Way CC is an outstanding tool and we have delivered many HD Broadcast masters using only FCP’s color correction tools. That being said, we’ve now been testing Magic Bullet’s Colorista and it’s outstanding, especially considering it’s only $199. I would highly recommend this tool if you want some serious CC within FCP.

Apple purchased Silicon Color which makes Final Touch. It’s a color correction software along the lines of a daVinci workstation that comes in SD, HD and 2K versions for $995 to $25,000 depending on the version. We own it, but XML does not work reliably enough for us on the round trip to/from Final Touch so we’ve shelved it for the moment. We’re now using Colorista and will re-evaluate Final Touch after NAB.

February 19, 2007 at 6:01 pmI made the switch to start a few new projects. I was an Avid guy for 10 years, now i’d say i won’t go back unless i have to. There are some mildly irritating things about FCP to be sure if you are used to Avids, but nothing that can’t be overcome with a bit of persistance and re learning. I bought the Diana W FCP book and found it to be a great resource. It took me about a month of working on FCP for a few hours a night and now i’m very comfortable with it although sometimes some things happen and i’m not sure what’s going on. If that’s the case, i just try to repeat my error until i figure out what i did to cause it. I’m close to delivering my first show on FCP and all in all it went great. The timeline functions alone, along with the motion options with wireframe as well as always being in “segment” mode are reasons enough to switch.
