Switching From Premiere PC To Prem Mac
Posted by Cliff Elliott on December 15, 2009 at 8:09 amA simple question, as a long time user of Premiere on the PC platform using CS3 at present would there be any advantage switching to a mac based Premiere, and can I transfer my PC licsense to a mac version of the software?
The reason I am asking, I do a massive amount of editing on a daily basis and have from time to time pulled my hair out with the occasional lockup out outright crash.
At first it was no big deal but now with the amount of work i do and the importance of the projects being worked on being critical I am looking at all options.
I have heard that the Apple version of Premiere is suposed to be a lot more stable thus the reason for the original question.

December 15, 2009 at 8:38 amWe have a Mac based studio, and our staple is Premiere Pro CS4. We’ve had tons of problems. But based on following complaints on the COW I don’t think PP on the Mac has any more, nor less, problems than on a PC. Whatever you do, make sure you have loads of computing power and RAM.
The bottom line is — there’s no guarantee you’ll get away from the problems by switching. (You will have more fun on the Mac, so in between tearing your hair out, you may have a small amount of comfort!)
I doubt you can transfer your license, though.

This has not been my anecdotal experience…It seems as if the problems are simply different.
Your license won’t transfer, I’m fairly certain of that.
are you on a Windows XP machine?

December 15, 2009 at 8:17 pmThank you for your comments Tam and Tim.
Interesting Comments, it proves you should always check things out and not accept urban myths that develope over time.Being a computer user since my first Amiga 2000 back in 1987 I have always trusted my own judgment regarding the hardware and software I use. But because I have been so busy over the last few years I have taken my eye off the ball and fel for the myth that Apple were more stable, It would appear from your statements both systems have their pluses and negatives.
Due to a decision I have made recently to perform a large software and hardware upgrade in the near future the comment I kept hearing about Apple made me wonder, but thanks to you guys I think I will stay with PC’s more from a financial reason tahn a technical one.
If the Apples could have Guaranteed me a more stable performance then it may have been worth the cost of changing.
And as a final statement for most of the time the system I use at the moment is very reliable, it just seems when I push the system hard occasionaly it will cause me problems that a reboot seems to fix.
And yes I am running XP at the moment but with the upgrade I think I will give Windows 7 a go.
Again thank you for you comments they have been very helpful.

December 18, 2009 at 4:34 amI’ve used Premiere CS3 on Vista sp2, very little crashes
I’m now using Premiere CS4 on Windows 7, even better.
There is no need to switch to Mac unless you want to get their own editing suite, final cut studio…but then you lose after effects and have to go to motion.
I’d recommend you upgrade that BSOD dinosaur XP though, honestly, I don’t know why people swear by it.

December 18, 2009 at 10:02 pmI needed a macbookpro becuse of situations with my XDCAM EX-3. I had an older version of premiere 6.1 on a PC. Adobe upgraded me from Premiere 6.1 to Premiere Pro CS4 for $300 and sent me the discs for the mac version. I had to agree to destroy the PC version to satify Adobe licencing.
It did take several weeks for them to send me the discs -

December 20, 2009 at 6:56 amThank you Ed and Mikkell, I appreciate the advise given.
I would appear I can move over to Apple versions of Prmeiere when I do the next upgrade to CS4 as Ed has explained but I after having a good look at this I now believe I would be better off going with a new Quad core PC with Windows 7 and upgrading to CS4 as Mikkell has suggested.Again thanks to everyone who responded I really appreciate the feed back.

Well, it’s always a little less scary to stick with the scoundrel you know…
