Switching from FCP
Posted by Tom Ohmit on August 24, 2011 at 9:11 pmI have decided to switch from FCP to either Adobe or Avid. I was wondering what input you all have, if any on things you like/dislike – especially if you have experience with FCP as a comparison?
I am currently using the trial of Premiere to do a quick project, and it seems pretty intuitive, but very limited in terms of transitions and effects. I am guessing ALL of that is done in After Effects after editing?
Also, what are you all using for DVD Authoring? I didn’t see an Adobe app for that.
Thanks for your input!

August 24, 2011 at 9:22 pmHi…
there are lots of threads here about FCP to PPro migration. Generally I think ppl feel pretty positive about it.
Operationally, they are like cousins. So the migration is not hard.
I will be giving a prezo on this the end of October….if you contact me at audell999(at)yahoo(dot)com I can give ya the details.
Take a look thru the forum….You’ll see you are not alone.

August 24, 2011 at 9:25 pmHi Tom,
I tend to “build” my own transitions for in and out with a series of effects that I select, hold control on pc or cmd on mac to multiple select. Then right click to create a preset which can be named and associated with the scale, in or out point.
DVD and bluray authoring is handled with encore. It’s a separate app but included in the PPro install. You can dynamic link to encore and send the seq directly there or export to DVD or BluRay spec and import that to a new encore project.

August 24, 2011 at 9:32 pmThanks man. I knew you had to be able to combine/create your own settings somehow – I’ve still got a lot to figure out.
I completely overlooked Encore! I’m just about done with this project, so I’ll get it a shot. I was going to throw it in DVD Studio Pro, but hopefully I can figure Encore out pretty quick.

August 24, 2011 at 9:39 pmHi Tom. I another recent transplant from Avid DS and FCP. If you feel there is a shortage of effects and transitions for PrP check out Boris Red 5.0 It has been released for the PC and the Mac will be out in the near future. I like it because it allows you to take the wonderful library of filters and use them to create custom transitions, as well as having a large library of existing ones. I did extensive research on this subject and after seeing the limit of professional grade plug ins for PrP, I was overjoyed to find this product. I just wish it was out NOW.
