Switch in FCP?

Yes…you’ll need a switcher before it gets to the computer. But it woudl still be wise to record on those two cameras at the same time…JUST in case.

You may want to look into this for your Mac Pro/G5…

There are some solutions out there for switching on the fly right on the computer like that which allow it to record to hard drive. Off the top of my head I know Blackmagic Design offers one such solution and a software title called On-Air 2.0. If you have two of their cards installed you can achieve live mixing between two SD or HD sources. Look into it if you plan to do this a lot because if you can take advantage of HDMI out on your cameras and don’t mind having to hook them up to your computer you won’t have to worry about genlock.

Also, there a forum here on the COW for “Telestream Wirecast”. It’s essentially a switcher on your PC (either MAC or PC), it takes a firewire signal in, and go “Broadcast” directly to the web.

I have never seen the products that have been described to you in this thread. I went to their websites, and perhaps I am wrong (I probably am) – but this seems to NOT be the product you are looking for. In my opinion (and I am often wrong) – you need Telestream Pipeline, which will record 2 HD cameras, or 4 SD-SDI cameras LIVE into your system, so you can start editing right away. This is not a switcher. It records both HD streams, then you edit it together with the multicam software in FCP. ProRes422HQ – no bulls#$%.

That is what ToolsOnAir uses. It also uses mxf4mac. Fully integrated switcher with graphics and lower thirds cut live.

Telestream pipeline lets you edit in multicam live in FCP while you are still recording. Very slick. There was another product called picture ready that would allow you to do this but you needed 2 servers per camera, way over kill. This is just one device that hooks into your system via 1 gigabit per camera.

I saw this in action at NAB. Two Kona LH cards in one MacPro capturing two streams of HD, and then allowing you to start editing right away. Pretty awesome.

Most of my clients simply would not spend $10,000 for a Telestream Pipeline, when products like Kona LHi exist now. I fully understand the implications, and the time savings, and the speed. For a company doing a 2 to 4 camera show, that does not need to go out live (or streaming) – I cannot imagine why anyone would buy a switcher, and all the associated gear, if they can simply use this instead. But you know, the world changes slowly, and everyone says “but I can have my editor sit here for an extra 4 hours, and accomplish the same thing”.
