I’ve contracted an event videography gig for a sweet 16 in June. I’ve spoken to the mother and daughter and they are looking for a nice, professional video, nothing crazy.

I’ve never filmed a sweet 16 before, what advice do would you have for a green sweet 16 videographer?

How does the event schedule of the day go?

Does the girl make a grand entrance? If so, best place to setup? Ever have lighting issues with the DJ’s strobes?

BIG difference from weddings which I’m more used to. Thank you in advance.

It’s not really a big difference than shooting a wedding. You need to get a timline of events and a clear explanation from the client or coordinator on what is going to happen. It varies from event to event. Usually there is some kind of entrance, but you have to find out ahead of time so you are not surprised.

There will often be speeches, plan to get good audio a couple of ways. It’s the modern equivalent of the “coming-out” party or Debutante ball. Covering the girl’s fashions will be important, also the decor and the band or DJ. Lighting will be varied and crazy. There is drama to be seen in the prep and pre-arrival, you can see some of this on MTV, though those are done to excess.

What kind of advice, are you a DJ too? That’ll be challenging.

One issue that’s come up is the blue LED lighting. It’s like the PAR Red lighting used to be. It looks bad on their faces and skin.

Unplugg the DJ lights and the blue goes away : )

Not much you can do. I try to tell them to turn off the blue lights during the father/ daughter dance and speeches.
