Sweeping a Spotlight on Text…
Posted by Jerry Cast on June 4, 2009 at 2:52 pmHi,
I’ve got a spotlight open and on one end of my text.
I see the start and end controls and have moved them back and forth.
But, I can’t seem to get it animated to sweep back and forth across the text.
I see the Animation Preset in the CC Spotlight controls, but the only choices are Empty or Save Preset.
I also see the stopwatch next to From and To but am not sure how to use them.
Thank you.

June 4, 2009 at 9:12 pmDave,
Watched some tutorials and joined Lynda.com. Thanks, I’m slowly picking it up.
By the way, my brother and I were born and bred in NYC, but he moved out to you town in Iowa 20 years ago. He loves it.

June 4, 2009 at 9:15 pmWelcome to After Effects. It is a very powerful program. Unfortunately it means there is a lot of learning involved. (Or fortunately, for those of us who attempt to make a living using this program.)
As Dave said, please read the manual. In fact, I would suggest reading the manual all the way through – with the program open so that you can try things out that you read in it. I know some programs have horrible help files, but not AE. Adobe did a great job.
If you find the manual difficult, there are always training resources out there. I doubt you can beat Total Training’s DVDs for receiving an all-around education, but there are tons of other great resources out there such as the Meyer’s books. And, once you’re familiar with the basics of the program, the COW, Andrew Kramer and others have fun tutorials with which to play.If you have any questions on basic things (such as this keyframe question) please remember there is a forum here at the COW – filled with experts just like this one is – but better equipped to help with beginner’s questions.
Again, welcome to the world of AE. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

June 5, 2009 at 1:07 pmHi,
Under Generate, in the AE CS3 Effects Menu, there is s CC Light Sweep that I have inserted onto a animated text title that says “Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino”, without the quotation marks.
I see the controls on the left for the effect, but playing it from the timeline below doesn’t do anything. I have to scrub the direction knob in the effects control back and forth and then I see the light sweep left to right.
I’m sure this is a basic question, but after reading and tinkering, I’m still stuck and this has stopped my project dead for too long of a time.
What’s the easist way to get this thing sweeping?
Thanks.
Jerry
