  • Swapping an image in a duplicate comp

    Hello everyone,

I have a composition with an animation in it, in which a single image is cut into several pieces and rearranged to form a new image (basically a slide puzzle effect).
I did this by duplicating the image onto multiple layers (15), masked each layer, and then animated the pieces into place.
I would like to duplicate this composition, and achieve the same effect with a new image. Is it possible to duplicate the comp and then swap out the image wholesale in the new comp? I do not want to relink the original media, because I still want the original comp with the first image (the idea is to dissolve between the two while the animation is occurring)
The only thing I can think of is to dupe the project, relink the image in the new project, and then drag the new project into my old project. Seems like there ought to be an easier way…. Thanks for any insight!

    -Jim
(PS – is there by any chance a plugin that will do a slide puzzle effect? could have saved me the trouble… )

Load your new footage in to the comp, (hold Alt – drag and drop) on to your chosen layer, this will replace the layers footage with your new footage whilst leaving your effects intact.

EDD: Some of the old Free Frame effects are pretty Puzzel like. .

You’ll need to use “Petes – After effects host for free frame plugins” to use the old FF stuff, it’s a bit hit and mis but when it works it really works well 🙂 You’ll find it here plus a load of free effects that can also be used in AE.
