  • Swap my Head with a 3d modeled head?

Posted by Sven Luvi on June 8, 2025 at 12:29 pm

    Hi everyone,

I want to create short videos daily where my real head is replaced or overlaid by the a 3D modeled head. The 3D head should follow my original head movements (rotation, position, scale) and also sync with my lip movements accurately.

I’m a complete beginner, so I’m looking for a super easy workflow — ideally something that can be done in just a few clicks or steps every day, without needing to redo complex tracking or animation manually each time.

I have DaVinci Resolve, but I guess I Need something Else for This.

    Specifically, I’d love advice on:

    • Simple tools or software that can do head and facial motion tracking automatically.
    • How to apply the tracking data consistently to the same 3D head model across multiple videos.
    • Easy ways to get lip sync working with the 3D head (automated would be ideal).
    • Recommendations for beginner-friendly software or plugins (e.g., After Effects, Blender, apps, etc.).
    • Tips for fast compositing so it looks natural and polished.

What would be the easiest way to do this?

    Hey Sven,

Sounds fun – you do with DaVinci have Fusion as a companion:
    https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/uk/products/fusion/visualeffects

I would then add Blender for actual modelling as it is free with a lot of accessible courses and assets.

If daily, you’ll want to have computer power, combined with “templates” (base projects) where you can easily manipulate the outcome.

    Hope this helps.

This is real easy to do with CreateStudio, then bring it back into Resolve and use like a title.

Hi! Sorry, but could you explain how this is Done? Would be so good if it’s really Quick and easy!

Do I Need to get my 3d modeled Head rigged for this? Wouldnt be a problem.

    Thanks for answering!

Hi, and thanks for helping me!

How Long would you guess This would take for Short half Minute Videos?

From just Reading This it sounds Like I manually would have to do a Lot here, right?

    Hey Sven,

The first time will take you the longest, second time will be faster, and eventually you’ll be able to do it quickly – but it is about experience, and you finding a way of doing it quickly at a quality that you are happy with.

Modelling and compositing is the least of your problems.

MoCap (Motion capture) of your face with tracking of mouth and eye movements is somewhat more intensive. As you need hardware, studio set-up (lights/greenscreen/microphone) and capture.

You can do it, but there is no single solution. And, if for just proof of concept, you might have to do with less than perfect, which is better than not publishing at all.

May I suggest that you join up to a very recent course published by Boundless Entertainment:
    THE VIRTUAL FILMMAKER’S PLAYBOOK
    https://boundless-resource.com/playbook

If you look through the description, they will show you how to do MoCap on an iPhone and use Unreal engine for creating characters.

It is a one off fee, so you won’t be charged more than once.
I have some of their other courses.

    Hope that this helps?
