  • SVP Version 6 — Can’t Capture HDV?

Posted by Chas Smith on December 17, 2012 at 6:04 am

I am dusting off my old Sony Vegas Pro 6.0 PC to use as a backup and for less FX intensive video projects. I had used it for DVCAM capture / edits but it has been gathering dust and I’d like to put it to good use. Problem I’m having though is I can’t get it to recognize HDV via firewire from my Canon XHA1. If I change the camcorder signal to downconvert from HDV to DV, it will capture without a problem.

I’ve looked in my SVP-6 book and can’t find anything that I’m doing wrong. System has a LGA-775 ASUS PL5VM 1394 Mobo, P4 CPU, 2GB ram and a fast HD Array RAID-0. I plug in the FW cable and the capture Software window opens up and doesn’t recognize the input at HDV.
Any pointers? I’ve never captured HDV on this set-up, only downconverted and DVCAM.

    Any help, much obliged.

When you select File | Capture Video are you presented with a dialog that asks if you want to capture DV or HDV? If you don’t see that, this may be your problem.

What capture software are you referring to?

Hi John, thanks for your response.

When I select Capture” from SVP 6, the “capture SW” I’m referring to is actually the device control / capture window of SVP 6. When I have my XHA1 set up to output DV (non-HDV output/downconvert), I can capture fine, the preview window shows the video being captured.

But if my XHA1 is set to playback HDV, when I select “Capture”, I get a window with the following: “Microsoft subunit device could not be opened …..” etc.

I’ve checked the “Video” tab in the Capture Mode and don’t see any setting other than the “Microsoft Subunit Device”.

So there’s no dialogue box asking me if I want to capture in DV or HDV. I’ve checked my properties settings in the project and it’s set to HDV 1440X1080i.

What am I doing wrong here? I’ve read that SVP 6 can handle the capture of HDV but there’s other posts mentioning Cineform Capture plug-in (for a fee).

Any ideas on what I’m doing wrong?

    Thanks in advance,

    Chaz

At some point, you told Vegas to stop asking you whether you want to capture HDV or DV and now it’s not giving you a choice so it’s loading the DV capture by default. What you need to do is go into Options | Preferences | Video and uncheck the option Use external video capture application and click OK. The next time you invoke File | Capture Video it will load the HDV capture utility.

Unfortunately I don’t know how to get it to ask you again other that reset Vegas by hold the Ctrl+Shift key when clicking on the icon but this will loose all of your customizations and rest Vegas back to the first day that you installed it so it’s not advised unless this really bothers you.

Again, Thanks for the quick response! 🙂

That did the trick and capturing HDV.
    Thanks again!

P.S. Considering the playback limitations, is there a plug-in like the Cineform HD Connect or something similar that is still avaialbe for the SVP 6 to improve the playback without affecting
    the video file quality?

SVP works but unless I do dynamic RAM preview, it’s tough to watch the playback with any accuracy.

Yes, VASST GearShift was designed to render DV Widescreen proxies so that you can edit smoothly and then swap the proxies back for the real HD files before rendering. You can swap back and forth any time you want to check your work. Vegas 6 comes with the CineForm codec so there is no need to buy CineForm and GearShift can batch render CineForm intermediaries in Vegas 6 for you too.
