Activity Forums VEGAS Pro SVP-8 Capture Aspect Ratio Problem

Someone asked me a question I could not answer, even after reading many posts.

Problem: All on the same day, same tape, same camera (HV40 Canon – set to DV-WIDE), tape captured in Sony Vegas Pro 8 so as to produce multiple AVI clips. Of the many resulting clips, all are 16:9 but a few, which are 4:3. I can change these or tell the person how to do so, but I also want to know why it may have happened.

I did not do the shooting or capturing and do not have the files to look at, but as fast as this forum is, I expect I will have an answer here before I can look at the files myself.

The only thing I can think is the tape was not blank prior to shooting, and capture picked up a trace of code between clips and used that to set the aspect ratio for the clips with incorrect settings.

    Any suggestions will be helpful.

    Thanks

I shot on an HV30 and used Vegas 8 for a while and never had a problem like this. I did, however, encounter a problem just like this when dealing with Cineform AVI files on Vegas 11. It would change the PAR on all footage from 1.33 to 1.

Though Vegas 8 was by far the most stable build of Vegas I’ve ever used, with 9 being a close second, I suppose I’d recommend upgrading.

Thanks for the reply Angelo. Updating is not an option for the videographer. If it happened all the time, it would be a major issue, but it is only on certain clips, say once every 10 or 20 clips, the aspect ratio doesn’t come down the firewire with the video. And I asked, the tapes are new, no previous program material on them, and I don’t think she striped them before using them, just unwrapped them and loaded them in the camera would be my guess.
