SVP 12 Device Explorer does not select USB devices
I’m trying out a new camera and I’m uploading some clips. In the cam there are two SxS cards and if I connect to my computer (USB 2) I can see them as two disks (as expected). I can, windows explorer, copy the files to a folder and Vegas can work with them just fine.
However the manual says don’t do this; use the supplied software (all the meta data and clips crossing two cards) which would be the XDCAM Explorer (2.1) supplied with the cam – alas it does not recognize the pair of XDCAM disks on the computer. I tried the device explorer in Vegas and it does not recognize the drives either. It can navigate the folder structure but will not allow you to select anything. I copied the entire tree to the local hard disk and once again I can work with the clips.Any ideas why Device Explorer/XDCAM Explorer is so disinterested in the disks?
There is a Tip in the manual to switch to USB Mass Storage. Checking the registry I am already set to do this on the PC and the CAM has no equivalent setting.
I formatted the SxS cards as UDF.

well I’ve partial answer. I tried installing all the supplied software on an older laptop (SVP 10, Windows 7 and 32 bit) and XDCAM Explorer started outside of Vegas works like a charm. However from inside Vegas XDCAM and Device explorer are the same.
It looks as though Windows 8 support is lacking for the external XDCAM Explorer. Perhaps I’m not sure what Device Explorer is supposed to do anyway.

If you are a serious editor, you dont immediately dump
everything on a brand new OS, wait until the dust have settled,
drivers updated and Software full compatibility catches up,
You are going to have inconsistency here and there as you are

I’ve made more progress on this problem. Seems there is a bit of a minefield in naming and programs that handle XDCAM clips. Cutting to the chase the main application for this is:

which seems to consolidate several xdcam related programs. This runs on Windows 8 (and probably Windows 7 and earlier). Following another tip you can also configure it as an “external video capture program” at Options -> preferences -> video.
