Surface Pro 3 as an editor
Posted by Michael Hendrix on October 2, 2014 at 8:32 pmJust wondering if anyone has a Surface Pro 3 and is using for Adobe CC?
I am thinking of trying one out for a portable solution. I have a loaded iMac for my main station, want something to take in the field for offload and maybe some light editing, media management etc.
Any experience?

October 3, 2014 at 6:21 pmIt should run fine, but your biggest limitation will be RAM. 4 GB would probably get used up very quickly, 8 GB should get you by as long as AE doesn’t come into play. Also, keep in mind that editing on that size display just won’t be very much fun. Tried editing on Macbook air once, it’s not easy.

October 3, 2014 at 8:14 pmI have a Surface Pro 2. I’ve used it for production in a pinch. It’s no match for my HP mobile workstation in terms of performance, but it sure is a lot lighter…
Another consideration for even light editorial is the integrated GPU.
On the plus side, though, the solid-state disk is very fast!

October 4, 2014 at 6:03 pmI have a Surface Pro 3 with the i7 and 8 gigs of RAM and do light editing on it all the time. Before I had the Surface Pro 2 which was only an i5 but still had 8 gigs of RAM and that also was fine. It actually is pretty smooth, the only issues I’ve had are the rendering times are much longer than my desktop computer because it lacks a dedicated GPU and that both editing and especially rendering do suck the battery life out of it.
However for someone like me who is working in various places around town and sometimes on the road, the Surface Pro 3 is a workhorse and very handy. Prefer having it than my heavy Mac Book Pro and iPad. Those two have now been regulated to home use only.

January 2, 2015 at 5:18 pmI just picked up the SP3 — i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB solid state drive — and loaded CC2014 PPro. We are shooting on the RED Scarlet, but when we dump footage on the SP3, PPro will not read it. It errors out.
I heard so much about the SP2 and RED footage, and decided to make the purchase, but if I can’t get PPro to read the RED files what good is it.
Any thoughts?

January 2, 2015 at 6:11 pmMarc, I’d suggest you start a new thread about RED footage errors — that might make it easier for others to find and help you.
