  • Suppress bounce light from green key on subject

Posted by Leen Michiels on September 1, 2016 at 2:20 pm

I need to fix the bounce light on subject.
Tried using key light+key cleaner+advanced spill suppressor.
Also using key light plugin, subject appears semi transparent after keying.
Tried duplicating layer to fix this, didn’t help.
Also notice a slight semi transparent white in background.

Keylight is not a press-of-a-button plug-in, it has a plenty of controls that need to be adjusted for each case. One of the best ways to see how your key is shaping up is to change the output to “combined matte” to see what you’re getting as the matte result and adjusting the settings (too numerous to cover here, look for a Keylight tutorial) to get a clean key.

I frequently use “Change to Color” effect to quickly clean up bounce light, but Keylight does have its own screen color suppression that works just fine in many cases.

For best results, use a color correction effect (such as the included Synthetic Aperture Color Finesse 3) that has secondary color correction capabilities to fix color cast from bounce light. That’s another whole subject in itself.

My typical Key Light workflow that has yet to let me down. (I’m writing this on the top of my head, so some of my wording choices may be inaccurate to the actual plug-in).

Use the color picker to get your key.
Adjust the balance if the colors get off.
Turn it from “Final Result” to “Screen matte”
Adjust “Clip Black” to clean up the black.
Adjust “Clip White” to clean up white and remove the transparency you’re dealing with.
See if the edges look good. If not, mess with the Pre-Blur. If you do mess with the pre-blur; you may also need to mess with the Shrink/Grow.

Hope that makes some sense haha. The big thing you need to do is the Screen Matte, and Clip Black and Clip White. That will fix a lot of what you’re talking about with transparency. And often the balance will handle the spill issues you may get.
