  • Support for DPX with embedded alpha or EXR?

Posted by Nat Jencks on December 11, 2013 at 5:19 pm

Hi, I’m getting a lot of VFX with mattes. I’d love to have the mattes embedded in the sources.

My initial testing indicates that Resolve 10 still doesn’t support DPX with embedded alpha.

What if any are my options for file formats which I can embed my mattes into?

    Thanks

pro res 4444 should work, assuming a mac workflow…

Yeah thats what I was thinking, but it looks like Nuke7 has a bug which makes it impossible to export Prores4444 with embedded alpha.

I take it Resolve 10 doesn’t support alpha in either DPX or EXR?

Can you export tiff with embedded alpha? Thats what I’ve been using recently and it works well

yeah that should work, but performance from 16bit tiffs is quite poor compared to 10-bit DPX, the tiffs are apparently not optimized for playback in the same way DPX are.

BMD, if your listening count this is a request for supporting DPX with alpha.

In case anyone’s keeping track, DPX with alpha is still not supported as of DaVinci Resolve v12.1.0.015. I just received a bunch of such sequences, and they open just fine in AfterEffects CC 2015, but show up as the red exclamation frame in Resolve.

Is it worth trying 12.3 which was released last week? The notes say improved codec support although DPX is not specifically mentioned.

I noticed a speed improvement and in general from 12.1 to 12.3

16 bit DPXs with alpha from AE works in Resolve. EXRs with alpha also work.

Now if only there were a way to use the embedded alpha as a matte in the same way one would use an external matte! This would make my life dealing with tons of VFX with external mattes so much cleaner!!

You were supposed to be able to use any channel from EXR but I never got it to work.

Sent some EXR’s to support but never heard back after a short to and fro.

If like me, you think this would be an INCREDIBLY useful feature, please email BMD and feature request it.

I’m surprised that the bigger shops doing tent pole films with thousands of VFX have not insisted on this but I know many of them are still doing external conform in smoke/autodesk so perhaps its a moot point if your not using Resolve as a conform tool, but I see it as a really big deal if your doing a VFX heavy job with tons of Mattes and using resolve as the conform tool, it would be a huge time saver.
