    Hi everyone,

Okay, here’s the deal. My rendering times in FCP are taking forever. We’re talking about 45 minutes to render 6 minutes of standard 640×480, 30 Fps. I have no idea what to do. The much crappier computers at my school are rendering clips like this in a couple of minutes.

I have the latest version of FCP.

    Mac stats:

    3.06 Dual Core Processor
    4 GB DDR3 1033 Mhz RAM.
256 MB Graphics card (ATI Radeon 4670)
    27 inch Display.

I know the VRAM is lower than it should be for rendering, but I haven’t found any evidence online that that should create this much of a slow down for rendering. I mean, it’s a 640×480 codec. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You’re going to have to give more details.

Such as: sequence settings and codec? Original footage specs? Why are you needing to render (ie. what have you added – filters, fx, etc – to or what are you changing about the original footage)?

You could have the fastest computer on the market and if you drop certain footage into certain sequence settings or add tons of processor intensive filters it could take hours to render just seconds of footage. Too many variables.

    Original footage-

a couple of clips from a digital camera:
    640×480 on a panasonic lumix DMC-FS5
30 FPS VGA onto a 8 gig micro SD.

    Also:

In terms of sequence codecs, they’re the same as the Camtasia codecs. I must be doing something pretty newbish. I went into user preferences to find that info.

Camtasia screen captured footage in 640×480. Converted to .mov or .avi
it still takes 2 hours for 13 minutes of footage. I haven’t added anything to it. I just threw it into final cut and it needed to be rendered. The audio would play if i fast-forwarded through it, but if i tried to just play it, it would just give me the “unrendered” screen.

    Thanks,
    August

    Hi August,

You’re working with a codec that FCP doesn’t support. To give us the full information so we can decide how best to help could you please select one of your clips and press CMD+9 to open Item Properties. Then please post a screenshot of that window.

It would also be good to see how your sequence is set up. You can do this by selecting your sequence from the Browser Window and pressing CMD+0 to open Sequence Settings – a screenshot of that would be good too.

The information in the Item Properties and Sequence Settings needs to match in order to not have to render, but you also must make sure you’re working in a format that FCP is comfortable with. For instance, 640 x 360 is not a frame size FCP will handle very well. It’s likely that you’ll need to convert your video files to something FCP understands, but we need more information in order to advise what to convert the files to.

    All the best,
    Alex

When working with weird codecs — I’ve always converted everything to ProRes first (with Compressor) and then work with that in FCP. Sometimes it would have to render overnight, but then everything would be in an easy format to edit.

Thank you! I’ll definitely try that.
