  • Suggestions: To use Motion JPEG 2000 for archiving or not?

Posted by John Romein on February 10, 2013 at 2:11 am

One of my customers asked me if I could capture a VHS tape and render it out in Motion JPEG 2000 because this is what the archive organizations are recommending for future longevity and compatibility.

First, I use Vegas Pro 12 and I noticed that the Quicktime render option (obviously in an MOV container) does provide MPEG 2000 and Motion JPEG A and Motion JPEG B…are these Motion JPEG 2000 codecs and what is the difference between them?

I understand that Morgan Multimedia has a Motion JPEG 2000 that works with a AVI container. I downloaded the demo to test it out but it immediately expired (bug?)! How does this compare to the codec(s) in Vegas?

    Cheers, John

What are the plus’ and minus’ to using Motion JPEG 2000 and is there a better option?

MJPEG 2000 superceeds the original MJPEG with a more efficient encoding algorythm than the previous MJPEG spec. This is probably why your customer wants it. MJPEG A & B are variations on MPJEG with A being more popular.

I haven’t done any testing but the Morgan codec is quite good. The question is, doesn’t your customer expect a QuiteTime MOV file or a Windows AVI file from you. That pretty much will dictate which one you can use.
