    Hi,
I have a friend, a retired Sea Captain, whom I have finally talked into getting a laptop. The reason is that he has a great collection of records, CDs, and MP3s and (I argued) he needs to catalogue. In addition, he is doing some original research on historical documents and photos, and there is an even greater need to properly catalogue. He has resisted becoming “computerized,” but I wore him down.
He will need a simple “database management” program, to handle his collections.
By “simple,” I mean that something which he will be willing to learn. (As an example, if he were doing video editing, he would be willing to learn and use Windows Movie Maker, but would never even try to learn, say, Vegas.)
I thought of EXCEL, but I was wondering if there are any recommendations for a more appropriate database management program ~ keeping in mind that the stubborn Captain will balk at anything complex.
    Any suggestions welcome!

I’d suggest a simple access database, with forms guiding him step by step, so not much room to mistype / mess up / damage anything. All you need is for him to spend a morning typing in a load of info, then accidentally lose it all in saving the file, to mess him up for good re computers. Access saves as you type, so that issue avoided straight off.

If the captain is dealing with a lot of images, you might try ACDSee version 8. We use ver 7 on all of our workstations. Virtually all of our studio assets – images, text documents, audio and video clips, etc. are easily organized and easily viewed.

I love VisiTrax. You can download a free version that will work with limited number of photos, CD’s etc., or pay for the full unlimited version which is about $20. It uses an automatic log entry for commercial CD’s so you don’t have to type in all the songs. I have about 8,000 listings in mine.
