I’m building a new edit droid for Vegas, Acid Pro, Photoshop, After Effects. How does the following look?

All opinions for better/cheaper components are appreciated. Right now I’m well over the $1K I budgeted at $1,225 (Newegg), so upgrading components is a very tough sell to Purchasing.

Let’s say you’re making a 1/2 hour show with multiple cameras. The difference in productivity between an i5 and an i7 is going to be about 8 shows. So your company is going to spend the money over and over with a slower CPU. Get more memory!

Faster? I think the 2500K is faster for $95 less.

    If I was going to go i7, I’d go with a 2600K:

Since the improvements are incremental, not incredible, the 2500K fits better into my budget than the 2600K.

From reading the reports of numerous Vegas power users on many threads, I’m unaware of any major performance improvements of budgeting more than 2GB per core.

Correct me with links if I’m wrong!

    Thanks for the feedback!

Correction, the i7 2600k (#12 on your chart) is $319, only $89 more. Don’t get me wrong, the i5 is an excellent processor for email and word processing. All Sandy Bridge Core i5 processors have hyper-threading disabled. Vegas is a very multi-threaded application. If you buy the i5 you’re going to pay the difference in lost productivity multiple times. Be careful how you interpret price/performance info.

Jeff said, “All Sandy Bridge Core i5 processors have hyper-threading disabled. Vegas is a very multi-threaded application.”

    Great point, Jeff!

Looks like I get to go a little farther over budget and get the 2600K instead of the 2500K.

    Thanks!

Yes, save money on an i7 sandy bridge. max out your ram though. get a video card supported by the mercury playback engine.

The 560 I chose is not a Mercury Playback Engine approved card.

However, there are ways to unlock my 560 to use it with MPE:

I’m already over budget and switching from a 2500K to a 2600K just screwed my budget further. A 570 would add another $130 I’m really not prepared to spend.

I got good news when a geek friend from Boeing recommended I get the Cooler Master RC-690 instead of the Antec 900. Better air flow and easier component access he says and the reviews back him up. So I’ll save $20 on the RC-690 vs the 900 (post-rebate).

The only place I’m still considering biting the bullet is going with 16G of RAM to take full advantage of all 8 threads on the 2600K. Hmmmm….

Thanks for all your feedbacks everybody!

If budget is an issue, go with an AMD 1100t…..six cores, more threads and nice render times! I have 3 AMD Hexacores (2 1090’s and 1 1100) for 3 editing suites and love them. Money I saved I put into 16G of RAM in all machines….also you can get a better decked out motherboard (I use gigabyte lately with great results). I have esata, usb3, more sata 6Gbs connections and more PCIe channels…..Just my two cents!

You could save an additional $26 by switching to the Antec 300, currently $82 free shipping, versus the 900 $100 + $8 shipping. Not quite as flashy, but flashy wears off quick. When you get more hard drives you can add a $15 fan up front. These cases are real nice.
