DVX100A in the Advance 24P mode in Final Cut Pro Studio (5). Anyone out there with some experience, problems,
suggestions, that can advise me on… I really want this too look great “film style” ala 16mm, but want to avoid any
problems after I’m done shooting. Don’t need shooting tips, but workflow between FCP and DVX100A.

Thanks in advance for sharing your ideas, comments, tips, etc.

what is your delivery format going to be? If you are going to go to a tape or a standard DVD for delivery, avoid shooting in 24p advanced mode. It will give you stuttery looking motion if played back at 29.97fps. The pulldown cadience is wrong for standard rate video (assuming ntsc). Just shoot “regular” 24p in this case. If it’s going to be conformed to film or a 24fps DVD, then advanced mode will be OK.

the end format would be digi beta, so I should shoot 24p normal, correct?
    thanks for the advise.

Yea. I haven’t needed to do it yet, but from all of my reading about the Panasonic 24p formats, the advanced mode has a different pulldown cadence than the “normal” 24p mode. If the advanced 24p is put onto tape at the normal 29.97fps rate, the motion looks a bit choppy compared to normal 24p footage. If you are planning to shoot in 24p, edit the tape in a more or less normal fashion and then output back to tape, the normal 24p mode is what you want. Pick up a copy of the book that comes packed with a new Panasonic DVX-100A-I don’t have it handy here so I’m not sure of the author. It has a very good explaination of the differences between the two modes. Also go to Natresses site for another great article on when you should use the advanced mode and when to avoid it. We have one of these little DVX-100A’s for taping small projects. Guess I could actually shoot some 24p footage and try it out myself!

by reading post here in creative cow, i read that a good book to have is DVX DVD and DVX Book by Barry Green,
i think this is the book you are reffering to, it seem pretty good, pretty expensive too, but, i guess is well worth it.

Natresses, do you have the site? i went on to natresses.com with no avail.

Thanks for all your input, is really helpful.

Got it, you were referring to Ken Stone’s FCP web site, by Graeme Nattress, sorry, i printed it out, it’s pretty good.
I’ll follow what is says, make some tests, meanwhile my book should get here.

    thanks again.
