We have a couple edit systems that are configured identically (except 1 system runs a Kona 2 board, the other a Kona LH). The Kona 2 system is running perfectly, but the Kona LH system takes forever to render. Sometimes, just clicking from clip to clip on the timeline invokes some kind of system delay. Both systems have recently been completely rebuilt, with clean installations of all software.

Here are the specs on the LH system:

    Dual 2.5 GHz PowerMac G5
    2.5 GB RAM
    OS 10.4.8
    FCP 5.1.2
    Quicktime 7.1.3
    Kona LH Drivers ver. 3.3

I do not believe the issue lies with any of the AJA Kona products or drivers. My hunch is that I should try swapping out and/or increasing the RAM in the G5. (FYI … the system was running slowly even before the recent software re-installations.) Any thoughts as to where to look? Thanks in advance!

Sounds like you might have a issue with the G5 itself… Could be on the way out. Do you have an Apple Protection Plan on those systems? Are you near an Apple store?

Yes, we have AppleCare, and there is an Apple service center here in town. A couple things we’re going to try is swapping RAM with a system that’s working, plus we’re going to run the hardware test disc that came with the system and see what comes up.

Always a good idea that you know that you have tried all you can before taking it to Apple Care.

It does sound like a memory thing, but sometimes even the Apple Hardware Test won’t catch memry errors.

What is your drive situation for the two systems? Hard drive read and write times play a huge role in rendering and playback.

On our Kona 2 system (the one that’s working just fine) we’re running a 7TB XRAID striped to RAID 50. The Kona LH system is running an older 2TB XRAID striped to RAID 50. The LH system also connects to the XRAID via a Vixel 315 fibre switch. Our 7TB XRAID is a newer model (purchased Dec. 2005) and connects to our G5 directly. Following the recent software updates/installations, we were forced to turn off LUN masking on the 2TB XRAID, as the G5 would not see the drive with LUN masking activated. (These were recommendations from our VAR.) I’ve also run Disk Warrior on both the XRAID and the G5.

    Other info:

The 2TB XRAID firmware is version 1.5/1.50f.

There is no control interface for the Vixel switch. It’s either on or off.
