Suggestions for computer upgrades
Hello all,
I am currently using Premiere Pro CC on my early 2011 Macbook Pro. It’s becoming more and more apparent that I am in need of an upgrade of some sort. Unfortunately, I am on an incredibly tight budget and can only really afford to either upgrade my memory or replace my current hard drive with an SSD. Which one will help me the most with render/export times?
My current system has a 2.3 Ghz intel core i5 processor, 4G memory and a 320G hard drive. I would either be doubling my memory to 8G or replacing my hard drive a 240G SSD.
Also, as is most likely apparent by this post, I’m a novice editor at best. Although I have worked as an editor semi professionally for a few years, I am self taught (mostly from trial and error) and need a good resource for learning the fundamentals of setting up an editing system and understanding what’s going on under the hood of my editing software, namely Premiere Pro CC. For example: I know that I need my media on a separate drive from the drive running my programs and am currently using a 1TB firewire 800 drive to edit from and render to. However I’m not sure if it’s the most effective set up or how, exactly, to determine what is. Basically I could post a billion low-level questions on these boards, but would rather know of a good website, online course, or book so I can learn these fundamentals and reserve future posts for questions a little more worthy of your time.

RAM might help (you can run the Activity Monitor during a render/export and see if you are maxing out your RAM or not) but the heavy lifting comes from the CPU and GPU and neither of those are upgradeable in a laptop.
Storage hooked up via ThunderBolt instead of FW800 will be faster (but also much more expensive). Depending on the type of codecs you are working with the FW800 might be fast enough.
