suggestion for “simple” animation program compatible with fcp
Hi All:
I’m a documentary filmmaker, and I’ve been hired by a non-profit to create a short (no more than five minutes) profile of J., a 14 year old boy with aspergers who is in foster care. Confidentiality rules prevent me from showing his face. Interestingly, J. likes to draw and is interested in “animating” his profile. I plan to film interviews with J, his foster parents and legal advocate and then edit those into a profile. The next step would be for J. to “illustrate” the profile like a “moving comic book”.I have no experience with animation. Can someone recommend the best program to use–preferably one that is compatible with final cut pro?

I haven’t used it but perhaps Toonit software might be used to disguise the actual interveiew footage and give it a cartoon animation look.
Red Giant software have Toonit from memory.

I am a big fan of hand-drawn animation – look at iStopmotion which uses a regular video camera. The cheaper or free version is for SD only. You can pay the big extra for the HD version. More here: https://www.boinx.com/istopmotion
The other option for HD is to simply shoot frame by frame in a current digital camera that will shoot pictures at 1920×1080 or larger. You assemble the animations in Quicktime and import to Final Cut. This is what I do for time-lapse video.
Flash will also work, but I don’t care for Flash, personally.
After Effects works great, too. Photoshop as well with CS3+ having video capabilities. Oh, don’t forget Motion.
It all depends on what you want to do.
