    Hi,

Has anyone encountered problems where one day the Quicktime clips in the RAID storage is no longer recognized as Quicktime movie and when you try to open it in Quicktime Player, it says “This is not a movie clip”.

The file size is intact and no problem encountered with the RAID storage at all. The RAID storage is an Infortrend FC storage and formatted as a HFS+ volume and connected to an XServe running OSX Server 10.5.

What we found is materials prior to Nov 2008 are the ones affected.

Anyone encountered this type of issues before ?

The resource fork might somehow be corrupted. There are a number of utilities than can restore file types/creator code info…just do a search on Versiontracker.

Do these files have the .mov extension? OSX is supposed to use that, but if the type/creator is corrupt it might be getting confused

[Christopher Tay] “Has anyone encountered problems where one day the Quicktime clips in the RAID storage is no longer recognized as Quicktime movie and when you try to open it in Quicktime Player, it says “This is not a movie clip”.”

We have seen this on our remote servers which may or may not be RAIDs.
The issue was user-caused. We told the Mac OS not to include the .mov file extension when the clips were copied form or local drives to the servers. Worked fine in older versions of FCP and OS9.

Can you see the .mov extension or, more likely, not see it at all? If you do not have it as part of the filename, you can use an Automator script to add “.mov” to selected files.
