Sudden bugs in version 6.0.3
Posted by Catherine Ceigersmidt on May 28, 2008 at 8:00 pmI haven’t had any bones to pick with FCP version 6.0.3…until today. First, Final Cut crashed three times, and each one preceeded my clicking on “apply effect to next clip” in the Color Corrector 3-way tool. Then I tried capturing some HDV footage the way I always have, using my Canon HV10 via firewire. When I push play in the log and capture window, no matter how long I let the tape run, whenever I click on ‘Capture Now,’ the pinwheel cursor comes up and essentially freezes the program, causing me to force quit Final Cut.
I’ve double-checked all my settings, and I have plenty of space left on my 1 TB media drive (about 750 gigs of free space). Is anyone else experiencing these issues?
Thanks,
Cathy Runge

May 28, 2008 at 8:19 pmTrashed the prefs, didn’t seem to help. Now I can’t even close the log/capture window without the program freezing. By the way, I’m running OS X 10.4.11…is it time for me to upgrade to Leopard?

Open a new project and see if the new one functions as it should. Its possible that your project file has become corrupted.
If it works you can copy your present timeline and bins to the new project and you should be fine.

May 28, 2008 at 8:58 pmTurns out Capture Now is working but it’s taking a ridiculous amount of time to start. When it does, it immediately stops and an error message pops up that says capturing aborted due to timecode break. I’ve noticed today that every time I start the tape, regardless if there’s a timecode break or not, two HUGE digital hits appear about a second apart from each other. Maybe my camera’s the problem. I just ran a head cleaner…so what’s up? Perhaps my camera needs a checkup?

May 28, 2008 at 9:18 pmSorry for yet another post, but I checked the camera and there’s no digital artifacts when I watch on the camera itself, only when I’m controlling it through Final Cut/viewing it in the log/capture window. I checked my firewire connection, disconnected/reconnected the cable on both ends and tried again, to no avail. Still seeing the hits, still getting an aborted capture after a minute of lag time between when I click ‘Capture Now’ and when it actually starts.
Help?

May 28, 2008 at 11:32 pmTry another cable. I had similar problems with a very long firewire cable that went bad.
make sure the canon cam is set for HDV on the firewire setting too just in case.
Leopard is the last thing you should be thinking about at this moment.
I’m holding out on the upgrade until I have to….can you tell 😉

May 29, 2008 at 3:35 pmI am sorry to ask … but are you capturing your footage to an external Medium?
If you are: capture a minute or so to your Main computer hard drive … if it works your External is acting up. This happened to me when my XRaid had an update and the system admin changed some things.
Also … if you are going to an external portable drive … are you capturing via Firewire 400 or 800 … funny thing … My external drives that had footage from a 400 firewire cable starting acting up after the FCP 6 update. Look into that as well.
Also … you said you had a TB … if that is internal (I assume 2 500 GB) … try capture to the other hard drive in your computer.
IF ALL OF THIS IS STILL ACTING UP … do you have another computer, perhaps a friend who has FCP that you can test is your software is acting up? … If not visit an Apple Store and test it on one of their computers … I did … you get props for knowing the software … (boost your stress a little) … put on a smile.
another thing to look into is when you are capturing HDV … have you tried turning off the check box that states make a new clip at every stop? If should be in the capture window. My capture NOW setting started acting up with that turned on when I first started capturing HDV.
Good luck at finding your culprit.

May 29, 2008 at 4:08 pmI’m capturing again! I figured out how to repair disk permissions to my startup hard disk using the Disk Utility. Steve was right on target!
