  • subtitles-recommended text size?

Posted by Zack Hill on October 9, 2006 at 12:53 am

I searched the posts and found info on subtitles, but nothing about a standard size or font. I have been using Arial bold with drop shadow at 24pt. and it seems to be a good size on the TV monitor. Anyone have a standard they use? I am finishing up interviews in Spanish that need to be subtitled, and any input would be great to help make me feel more confident about my decision in size and text.

    thanks,
    jesus

24 Arial is a good size. There are a number of recommendations to not ever go below 22 point, but as you probably know,
it depends on the font. we use 24 point Arial pretty regularly.

Yar, I’ll second Ariel. it is universally readable and comes with complete sets of glyphs for any possible language issues. We have gone to 22 pixels and compressed leading to fit four lines in the space we’d normally fit 3. Not recommended, not pretty.

We use 6 second modules with 10-frame fades for most subs and captions.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
