I’ve had to import a media file as its codec wasn’t supported unless i imported it. The footage had subtitles added and you can see these when you play the footage using VLC before importing for instance, but they don’t appear in my source monitor, is there a reason for this? And how can I solve it?

    Many thanks in advance

The subtitle track is something embedded in the metadata of the video file. That’s not something Avid can read and then display. If you want them to be in the Avid, as a separate element, you’ll have to extract that file and import it separately. I don’t know how to do that…hopefully someone will answer who does. But I do know that you need to do some shinanigans to get it into Avid. Get that .SRT file out and converted to something Avid can import.
