  • Subtitles in FCP & DVD SP

    Ok folks, here it goes:

I often get requests to add subtitles to corporate films and burn them to DVD, which is easy enough. But I don’t think I am working in the most efficient way. I use Boris Title 3D in Final Cut Pro and create a quicktime with the subtitles on, which i then encode in compressor and import in to DVD SP.

The problem with this method is that if I want to make a DVD where the viewer has the option of turning the subtitles on or off, I have to create two quicktimes, one with, one without subtitles. Which can take up too much disk space.

I am sure there is a way to export the subtitles that I have created in FCP, to DVD SP, but I just don’t know how. My aim is to have a button at the bottom of the DVD menu which turns on/off the subtitles.

I do not want to use DVD SP to create the subtitles as I find the Boris 3D tool creates a higher quality looking subtitle.

If anybody could explain their methods I would greatly appreciate it. Also If I need to buy some additional software, please feel free to recommend some.

    Thanks in advance.

    John

This is possible if you export your titles as a xml and run them through a program such as Spherico Title exchange. This program converts your files into a subtitle stream that DVDSP can read. This will allow you to use one movie in DVDSP and the user can turn the subtitles on and off.

But TitleExchange won’t work which Boris – and no other similar XML application will work with it as well.
The TitleExchange demo comes with a free but professional subtitle generator called TextUp which may/will be helpful when doing subtitles.

Good Point Andreas. Hello by the way!

I use TextUpPro myself while subtitling. The title safe function speeds up subtitling considerably. I highly recommend it.
