  • Subtitles – can they scroll?

Adding subtitles to project, sometimes the speakers are pretty quick and the viewers will need to be Eveyln Wood Speed Readers to keep up. Is it possible to have subtitles scroll across 2 or 3 lines similar to closed captioning? I think this would make it slightly easier to read everything before it’s replaced by the next line. I mean can they do this in DVDA without having to create a scrolling track in Vegas and just overlay it. If not DVDA, do you know if Encore does this? I have access to Encore but have always used DVDA.

    thx

True subtitle overlays (and menu overlays for that matter) as a part of the DVD-Video spec are very limited and really can’t be very fancy, so it’s not really a feature that can/can’t be in an authoring app. In other words, sure, you can add scrolling subtitles to the video in Vegas like you would any other titles, but hot when adding true subtitles to a DVD-Video disc of the sort that can be toggled on and off.

I think you can add a CC signal to the video on a DVD, however, although I have no idea how to do that.

Hehe, yea, well, if it’s any consolation, I’m not entirely sure scrolling would make subtitles any more readable and might have even made them less readable. I can’t remember the study right now, but I seem to remember scrolling text taking twice as long to register in the brain and being something like 15% less readable overall. Or something. Don’t quote me on that. Anyhow, you wouldn’t have known if you liked it until you tried and that’s a moot point now!
