When you say quality is bad, where are you viewing it and what is the final media people will be viewing it? I hope you have tested it there. Second, some fonts and colors does not look good in various media as well. You have to be careful on choosing them. I know there were experts who put these info on the web for us, but I could not put my hand on them right now.

Well, we will need a little more info. Are the subtitles part of a motion background or on black letterbox?
Your bit rate, frame size, CBR or 2 pass VBR ?
BTW, a black box behind them is recommended for lower bitrate compression to isolate them from the rest of the footage.

Either that, or use a drop shadow softened quite a bit.

I have tried lots of combinations but the one I use the most is the Adobe Media Encoders WMV9 720 25P default which is 2 pass variable constrained, average bit rate: 5.000 and peak 8.000.
This is the setting that has worked the best but does still degrade the quality of the titles. I don’t use .WMV that often so I
