Never seen it so I’ve got no clue but making a layer disintegrate into particles is easy after you master any of twenty or fifty particle systems.
You’d have to post a still to being deconstructing it and trying to figure out which filter was used. Probably was done with a more sophisticated flocking system, though.

Would trapcode particular be suitable for this type of effect? If so, is there a tutorial somewhere about making layers disperse using particles?

The effect I’m talking about is also similar to the one used on the SciFi channel logo (if you’ve seen that).

Particular is a “solve everything” plug in around here. People use it for the weirdest stuff. There is a Particular forum, too, I think.

Never seen this SciFi thing of yours. If you want to communicate visually and make sure everyone knows what you’re talking about, you’ll wat to post a link to a file.

Editorially: I prefer links to still images because too many newbies link to a youtube clip that is twenty minutes and long want to know how to do an effect that appears in some odd five second clip.
