I’m having an odd problem that I fear maybe a FW drive issue, but hope it may only be a setting issue. As my timeline plays, everything looks good, then randomly my video starts to jiggle and stutter, but it doesn’t drop frames like I would expect it would.

I’m running a G5 2gig of ram of FCPHD, and using 2 LaCie 250 FW drives and a Maxtor 250 daisy chained together. This just started happening, Everything has been fine for the past month using this same set up. A few days ago,I started dropping a lot of frames, but I ran DisK Warrior on the drives and they were pretty messed up, so I fixed it and now this problem starts.

I hope this makes sense, I’m really screwed here.

This doesn’t seem to be happening when I play the clips in the viewer window, only when I play back the timeline in the canvas window and external monitor.

Are you using DV or a larger video codec?

DV, we’re bringing everything in off of a DSR 45

If all else fails, do an audio mixdown. You can also output a QT Ref movie, reimport it and play off of that.

I know that you and many others don’t want to hear this but….

IMHO, FireWire drives, especially daisy chained ones are a lot less reliable with FCP 4-4.5 than they were in the past. Avoid them if possible. If you must use them, don’t fill them up too much and keep them maintained as you work with them, not just when they show signs of problems. If you are using a PowerBook, by all means, get a separate card bus adapter to separate the drives and the deck.

If you want more stability, go with internal SATA drives. Faster drives make all the difference with modern versions of FCP.

Kevin, we’re seeing an increase in “timeline playback hesitation”-type posts here and on apple.com.

Do you suppose some of the answers could be as simple as FW drives getting filled up?

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
