Stuttering, maybe due to 23.98 vs. 24
I’ve encountered an issue on my last two projects, I’m sure it’s an issue with a frame rate setting or source media frame rate, but it only arises when I render to quicktime, not DPX.
For each project I have a timeline with the settings: “Playback frame rate: 24,” “Video Monitoring format is: HD 1080psF 23.98,” Timeline Conform: 24″, and compare it to an offline reference at 23.98. Every frame matches and it plays smoothly.
When I render to DPX with a 23.98 render frame rate in target mode, the DPX output lines up with the offline and plays back smoothly.
When I render to Quicktime (tried ProRes422, 4444, Uncompressed 10 and 8 bits) with a 23.98 render frame rate in target mode, the output begins to duplicate and skip frames. On both projects this stuttering begins very close to 1:11:08:03 (project starting at 00:59:30:00, so about 11 minutes 38 seconds in). The final number of frames is correct; it’s dropping and repeating frames…
I tried to take the DPX output that lines up correctly and make a Quicktime from that, but encountered the same issue at the same point in the reel. I tried to “convert file format” of the 23.98 DPX output to ProRes4444 and it created a good ProRes4444 – but with a framerate of 24fps.
It’s possible that some of the VFX shots (DPX sequences) are 24fps instead of 23.98fps, but the principal footage is all 23.98… One project is RED one is Uncompressed 10-bit 23.98 pre-edited master…
I rendered the DPX output into two quicktimes, each less than 11 minutes, and the issue did not arise, which is my current workaround. Anybody encounter this, or know what triggers it? System set-up below, thanks!
