Whenever I take one of my MP4 files and open them in vegas to do some cleanup, the resulting video has a lot brighter output than the source.

    Original:

    Output from Vegas:

You can see how on the Vegas output you can see a clear difference between the black bars on top and bottom where the original the black levels were pure black and bars weren’t seen.

My final destination due to using Xbox is a high bitrate WMV file but am using vegas to use a clean video filter and then use Microsoft Expressions for the final encode.

I encode with AVI uncompressed in Vegas as the output format. Taking the original video and converting with Expression Encoder directly looks great, just when I use Vegas get the lightening.

Final display is on a plasma screen thru my media center system. No plan to put on BluRay or DVD.

Should I be applying the Levels Studio RGB to Computer RGB setting for the final output? Seems like it may return things to the source levels but not sure.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks.

This is a Minefield of Workflow logic – or better “A Workflow Minefield”. No really, I’m being painfully genuine.

Determine WHAT is to be your final OUTPUT here that means delivery from WHAT to WHAT – Computer or ………?

Edit in Vegas using the correct Levels corrector to get you SEEING what you want. Not forgetting you are viewing your Editing work on what? VGA Monitor or LCD Flattie or SD CRT?

I have to think pretty clearly to determine just what my own workflow IS, just to ensue myself I’m doing the correct processing – it is not straightforward. However it IS easy to rectify but Vegas doesn’t help us in determining just what WE each need – that is left up to us. Actually Vegas does helps us a bit by making sure we keep an EYE on the Scopes.

Here is the “Guru of Levels”, Mr Glenn Chan writing over on the Sony Vegas Forum:

“You should do something to make sure that you have an accurate preview.

    – Firewire out through a camera to a TV (preferably a CRT). If you work with SD a lot, I would highly highly recommend this. There are things like field order issues that are impossible to see on a computer monitor.
    – Use a windows secondary display at the preview device. Go into the settings and check the studio RGB box.
    – Apply a “studio RGB to computer RGB” preset in the Levels FX to the video output FX. This can get you into trouble if you forget to turn it off when rendering your final video or when rendering to a new track.”

See? – Take note of that very last comment.
