    Hi Folks!

After a few years of Jump/Remote working, I now have to subscribe to my own Media Composer.

I’ll be starting a series in a few months and I want to make sure I get the correct Avid/Mac configuration.

I have a Mac Studio M1 with 32 gigs of ram. I cut with 3 monitors: one for bins, one for Composer and one in Full-Screen mode. (I don’t use a TV Client monitor)

    So my question is:

What version of MC to use and on what OS should I be on for the most stable situation?

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

    Hi Eric,

Thanks! This chart it very helpful. The one thing I’m confused about is this:

Since a new Avid is good on 3 OS’s (Big Sur, Monterey and Ventura), why wouldn’t everyone just choose the lastest (Big Sur). Is one OS more stable than another? Is one OS bumpy? Basically, why would you want one over another?

For some its other apps that require a newer OS.

For me I usually stay at the lowest possible one.

For home I have a 2013 Mac Pro running Monterey.

The only version I am able to use is 2018.x

That was the case last year but something broke and now I cant run it.

I use a dongle so I think that might be the reason.

So far no clients require me to edit in Avid so Im not worried…for now.

I hear you Eric. I’ve been working on my 2010 cheese grater with a dongle for years and I’m now entering the current world of Mac Studio and subscriptions. It’s nice and quiet. 🙂

Have a good one and thanks again for your help!

Yikes, this was featured in Cow’s big email blast and no one replied?

What good is it talking about MC 2018 and a 2013 MP, when the OP has a Mac Studio? Studios cannot ever run the 2018 version.

Trevor, I recommend the latest version, 2024.2. Or 2022.12, it also seems to be quite stable for us. I manage many, many Avids at our facility, including many on the Studio M1. We actually have many machines on 2023.12 but it’s been so-so.

As for the OS, you got it backwards… Big Sur is the oldest, not the latest. Not much difference between them all, except that Ventura changed the system preferences and now no one can find any settings. 😉 But we live in Apple’s world, there’s no choice… Go for Ventura (not Sonoma), because it will give you macOS security updates for another 1.5 years.
