I’m a film student looking for an affordable color studio monitor for my home set-up. I have a budget of a few hundred dollars and I probably only need something between 9″ and 14″ (that is really all I can fit in my room…). Any recommendations? I’ve browsed through Sony, JVC, and Panasonic models, but I’m unsure what I should be looking for. How many lines of resolution (500+ lines?)? In/Out capabilities in the back of the monitor? Ideas or suggestions?

Also, do I need a deck to run a monitor off my G5? Is there a breakout switcher or something that I can run via firewire into a monitor? Regardless, what type of deck should I be looking for? I’ve checked out the Sony DSR-11 and DSR-25, but they don’t seem to be affordable right now.

For now, I shoot a majority of my stuff on a DVX-100 and, consequently, work largely with miniDV. Any higher format I’ll digitize onto an external drive at school or at a post-house. I don’t specifically need a deck at home for format tweaks as I have resources at school and such. I really don’t want to have to buy a miniDV deck because I fear it becoming antiquated if I don’t go the way of miniDV or HDV. I do, however, desperately need a monitor.

Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to respond.

    Best,
    Tobin

If you don’t have a deck, you can always use your camera as a firewire DV to video converter. I guess many of us started that way! Your DVX will work for this. That leaves a monitor. I use a little JVC 9″ and that’s quite nice, although small, but at least it can double up as a mobile monitor when you’re out on a shoot.

Thanks, Graeme. Any advice on lines of resolution I should look for in a monitor? 500+? How much does resolution matter in a 9″ screen? I’m probably going to go the used/eBay route, so any info will be useful.

Ideally 500+ is what you need to see all that DV and SD has to offer, but I don’t think seeing resolution is the key thing for basic monitoring, just colour and interlacing which is what you don’t get from your computer monitor.
