  • Student Q: How long does it take to create a highlight of a basketball game?

I am a student researching the editing process to create sports highlights, specifically basketball.

I would be grateful to know how much time it takes to create a quality basketball hightlight. A second question is how many editors work on one game to create the highlight.

One thing I have not be able to figure out is how many editors work at most broadcast stations. Is the range 20-40 or more like 60-100 for the likes of ESPN, ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, etc?

It you can help me out that would be great.

    Thank you,
    Sebastian Yore

How long is a piece of string?

Are the highlights for a VO (Stuart Scott talks while the video runs) or a self-contained package (using a radio call, nat sound, graphics to tell the story of the game)?

I can tell you from my experience, for a self-contained package on a DIV 1 BBall program, with a radio call, cutaways, graphics takes about 4 hours. That includes digitize time and time to lay back to tape. The package is usually 4-5 minutes.

Of course, all the graphics are pre-built, and all the editor needs to do is change them accordingly.
