  • Stretching when exporting from Media Encoder 7.1, 7.2

Posted by Jonathan Lapointe on December 16, 2013 at 4:30 pm

    Hello,

This is my first post here (despite being a long time follower of the COW).

The issue I’m having is, to my mind at least, a bit bizarre. The program I edit is shot in SD NTSC recorded on AJA Ki Pro Rack in ProRes 422. I edit in Premiere and then export several different files for delivery from Media Encoder. However, when I updated to 7.1 I noticed that all of the Ki Pro footage was being squished and letterboxed. My presets hadn’t changed, and when I exported directly out of Premiere with the same settings everything was perfectly fine. I eventually found that Media Encoder was for some reason interpreting the SD NTSC footage as having Square (1.0) pixels instead of rectangular (0.91). I could find no solution to this.

I recently upgraded to 7.2 hoping it would fix the problem. It appears that it has simply changed the nature of the problem. Rather than being letterboxed and reading as square pixels, it’s now reading as rectangular but stretching the footage out significantly and cropping the edges off. All settings are identical as far as I can tell (including scale to fit). I can still export out of Premiere with no issues.

I’m afraid this sounds a bit convoluted so I’m uploading a screenshot of the Export windows. The window on the left is the Export screen from Premiere in which everything is correct. The window on the right is from Media Encoder. The settings are the same, yet the Media Encoder video is stretched.

I appreciate any help anyone can give me. Thanks a lot.

    Jonathan

I thought for sure the update would fix it but still having the similar problem. Stretched video exports from Media Encoder CC ( actually crops the sides ). On my end though, I noticed that if my clips on the timeline are AVI and and image sequence, stretching does not happen. I hope Adobe fixes his soon.

    hi

has this only started happening since installing Mavericks on a mac?
    mine is doing that too

didnt ever do before when i was running it in snow leopard.
also noticed if you quit it, and restart it, sometimes it stops doing that….sometimes.

does it on my photo jpegs that i export from fcp7.

those videos that I export from fcp 7 (exported as a qt conversion photo jpeg), the actual size of the exported video is correct when viewing just on the screen, but when I look at the ‘info’ it reads that it is very wide. The info reads that it is not the size that i asked to be exported. (even tho looks like it)

That video, when taken into ame stretches out….
other qt photo jpeg exports that i made from aftereffects did not do that: info reads correctly, and goes into ame properly.
so that i my experience….hope it helps you.

if u have any ideas on my thing….great.
    what do you think?
    warmly,
    hope

When I had the issue I was running on either Snow Leopard or Mountain Lion, don’t recall offhand, and I was running CS6. The solution that I ended up with then was simply to switch to a different encoder, in my case Telestream Episode. It’s a very robust and professional encoder but it doesn’t come cheap. Also, while I haven’t fully tested this, I believe in my case upgrading to Adobe CC cured it as well.

In regards to the stretching issues you’re seeing, is this NTSC 4:3 Standard Definition video you’re working with? Or is it something else? Not knowing too many specifics of your situation, the first thing I always check when something is stretched improperly is the pixel aspect ratio settings. If you’re working in an NTSC 4:3 situation, you should have rectangular pixels at 0.9091. If it’s NTSC Standard Definition Widescreen then you need rectangular pixels 1.2121. If it’s HD 1920×1080 or 1280×720 then you should be using square pixels.

I’m not sure if that’s what you’re looking for, but that’s just the first thing I always check. If that doesn’t fix the problem, just provide as much specific information as you can, and maybe we can figure something out.

    Sincerely,
    Jonathan

Hi Jonathan…thanks for the input / reply. You were right on la point. (-:

Very kind of you to write all this out. I found your post here when having this stretching problem. Your great attention on this has really helped. it inspired me to try some different output settings in fcp for QT. My settings in the output module for fcp, like you say where checked ‘anamorphic’ which in fact the video is not anamorphic.

Now I am getting the right readings and no stretching in ame. Hurray…thanks to you.

Working w square pixels, wide screen (standard def) 1024 x 576, PAL. the movie looks like that, but then info was reading that the size was 1456 x 576.

Have now fixed that situation as above.

Hope you have a fabulous day !

    Thanks again soooo much,

    Warmly,
    Hope
