Is it possible to stretch a 4:3 clip to 16:9? I’m working in a 1920×1080 timeline and I want to stretch a 4:3 clip rather than scale it. Technically, the 4:3 clip is really a 16:9 clip becauser black bars were encoded on the sides, but the image is 4:3. Is there a way to stretch it while keeping the height the same? The distort function in FCP7 makes the clip shorter when I stretch it. If this can’t be done in FCP7, can it be done in FCPX?

use a combination of distort and scale.

most likely the distort will be 33.3 (or -33.33)
    and the scale 133.33

but watch out for any black edges.

if you’re working in the canvas,
you can hold SHIFT while you drag the borders of the wireframe.
it’s not particularly accurate, but can get you close to here you want, then you can refine in the motion tab.

Elastic aspect by Andy Mees. The FCP7 version seems to have gone underground but you may be able to find it. If not, you might try contacting Andy directly. Failing that I might have it somewhere.

Watch the FCPX tutorial to decide if it suits your requirements.

Thanks guys! Wow, that elastic aspect feature is cool! Never heard of it before. That’s great that you can select a portion of the frame that doesn’t get stretched. I’ll see if I can find it for FCP7. I have FCPX too, so if I can’t do it in 7 I’ll do it in X and then import the clips into 7.

I was able to successfully install Andy’s elastic aspect. Wow! That thing is amazing. Just what I was looking for. Thanks for the tip!
