Stretched SD ProRes footage in Premiere CS 5.5
Hi,
I have an event coming up soon with an on-site edit with a quick turn around.
We will be using to AJA ki Pro min to record to compact cards with our Sony 450 DVCAM cameras.As the Ki Pro Mini records to prores codec i thought id do a few tests to make sure all was well in premiere (i don’t have FCP so therefor don’t have ProPres codec installed)
Working in 720p and 1080p seems to work fine in premiere.
However we will be recording in SD. I downloaded a ProRes sample file from here : https://static.clipcanvas.com/sample/clipcanvas_14348_ProResHQ_PAL.mov
And when i try to import it as a sequence the video is stretched far beyond 16:9 and the only way i can rectify this is to change the scale width on the clip to about 70%
The file looks like it is being imported at 1024×576 (1.4587)
Is this an issue with premiere or the file I’m using?
I don’t want to hire in the KI Pro Mini if this is a problem

In the media bin, right click the file and select Modify > Interpret Footage. You can then change you Pixel Aspect Ratio. Since the sample video is already 1024×576, it looks like it has permanently been resized and should be conformed to “square pixels”. Alternately, the same frame of footage could be represented by normal PAL 720×576 set to a 16:9 Pixel Aspect Ratio.
Like anamorphic film, it’s a way to represent frame aspect ratios outside of NTSC/PAL’s normal 4:3.
Chances are it was the file you were using. It might have never had the PAR information reset when it was resized.

Angelo nailed it.
I downloaded the clip, it shows as 720×576 natively (but yes, QuickTime will stretch it to display correctly as it has non-square pixels.)
Premiere Pro isn’t detecting that the pixels are rectangular. Use the modify command as Angelo said and it should fix the clip(s).

Thanks for your help, yup, nailed it.
One other little issue I’ve been noticing lately is when rendering out my clip 720×576 widescreen. the Clips plays fine in VLC and other media players but in Quicktime its playing squashed 4:3. Not sure why this is happening. The only way i can get it to play normal in quicktime to present to clients is to export at 1050×576 square pixels, which isn’t ideal as this doesn’t seem to be supported in Adobe Encore.

QuickTime isn’t getting the flag that it’s 16×9 footage, with nonsquare pixels. Don’t know why. There’s always been an issue between AME and QuickTime fully communicating. If you hold down the shift key, you can manually fix QT…and you may be able to manually adjust it- but you might need the QuickTime 7 install (and it may have to be pro.)

Why not encode as a h.264 from AME? This will correct any sort of aspect ratio as the end product will have square pixels.
In encore, you need to bring in the media and throw the switch in the inspector that says “16×9”. All DVDs hold video at SD sizes…but get a flag for widescreen. Right click on the asset, say “Interpret footage” and choose conform to wide screen and that should fix it.
