This just started happening in a project that has, for the passed month, not had any issues like this before.

On playback of non-rendered material (orange bar across top) picture will freeze on a frame for more than a few seconds (4-8 sec) in both the canvas and external monitor, audio will continue. Picture will jump back in for a frame or two, then freeze again. On occasion the canvas and external monitor will strobe green and pinkish frames.

I know this might sound like just the system not being powerful enough to keep up (not sure if that would explain the green and pinkish frames popping up, but would explain the jumpy playback), but until today it has no problem playing back the exact same sequences it now has trouble with. And this is a purdy decent rig capable of heavy lifting.
Activity monitor shows all 8 cores running at about 25-30% during playback, 5.2 gigs ram free

The only thing I’ve done in the passed few days is install Boris Red and Genarts Sapphire.
I’m not going to blame either of these products for causing this, but does installing either of them affect FCP’s performance? even slightly with registration checks, tying into external code.. so on????
I haven’t used plug-ins from either product in this project.

Any other thoughts? Tech Tool shows system normal. preferences trashed. AJA system test shows drive speeds all good.

All material is SD ProRes HQ
    MacPro Octo 3.2 8gigs Ram
FCP 6.0.3 (not upgrading until after current project)
    QT 7.5
    Kona LHe
    4TB G-Speed eS R-220mbs W-201mbs (1.6 gigs free)

1.6 Gigs free? you need to empty that raid a bit.

    What happens if you render?

What is causing the footage to playback not rendered in the first place.

Rendering gives me perfect playback, but, rendering all the time not really an option here, as I would be rendering all day… I leave finished sequences open for render when gone for lunch/dinner, overnight when needed. None of the open sequences I am currently working on have previous renders attached unless occasionally going over certain precision edits.

Sequences are pseudo multi-cam. 5-7 ISO’s with layers not on set 100% transparent, some PIP here and there, and 2-4 layers of GFX over top (pot totals, hand cards. percentages)
(oops, guess i lied in my original post, not all footage is ProResHQ as I stated, GFX are Animation .mov’s rendered out from Motion**)

It’s the GFX that cause the orange line. Green line over all the prores only parts.

Once picture is locked, I will delete all the 100% transparent clips, but need it there until then.

Any hu, the fact that the orange line is there isn’t of concern. I expect it to be there. But the way playback hangs all of a sudden without anything in the sequence being different.
Before this started happening, the sequence would playback fine for preview purposes, happily skipping frames as it needs to playback. Now it plays a couple seconds (2-6) then hangs on a frame for 6 seconds or so before jumping to the next, then another hang… add in the strobing green and pink frames every so often,,, hum…..

** Side note, GFX were originally all going to be made as motion projects, so they could be dynamically altered, and imported as such into FCP, but FCP crashed hard when I tried to import a couple hundred little motion projects into one FCP project, crazy ram filling failures.

Whatever the issue, it’s gone away and playback is back to normal again….

    Hopefully for good!

There must have been something going on in the background eating up either throughput from my raid, or processor power,, but I couldn’t find the cause….

Doesn’t look like the plugs i’ve installed are the culprits either,, I hope…

[Matt Kerstein] “All three of our AJA LHe systems are doing this..”

Doing which?? freezing on playback in the canvass, or strobing green frames? If freezing playback in the canvas is your trouble, this will have nothing to do with your Kona cards. It will be either a system performance issue, or a disk drive throughput issue.

If you are experiencing strobing green fames, and it’s only happening on your external monitor, and not in the canvas, which is happening to me, then have a look at your reference signal. If you are not sending a reference signal to your Kona and other external equipment, make sure the ref signal in the AJA Control Panel is set to “FREE RUN” Otherwise you will see your external monitors jump around a bit here and there.

If you are sending black burst/colour bars to your kona card, be sure to send it to your external monitor, and be sure your Kona card is set up to accept the reference signal in the AJA Control panel.

As for my solution, well,, I shut the system down for lunch, came back and everything was running normal again…

I’m having audio playback issues in FCP…have done nothing other than the recent pro app update. I also have a beefed up rig…and this makes no sense since everything in the timeline is where it’s supposed to be.
I thought maybe it was the current project I was working on, but I have now discovered previous projects will not play audio correctly either.
Clips are fine until I bring in to the viewer, then the audio goes haywire?
Apple claims to have no reports of this.
