Strange outlines!!
Hi, i’ve just noticed a strange outline effect that has been going on in my time line. It seems that the border of some clips make a black edge, which is emphasized when the edge if feathered! Also in the same sequence when I move a text it creates another (but different) outline around the text.
My sequence setting is H.264 if that makes a difference.
I need some advice!!Notice the black line just to the left of her?
This is the same object with a feathered edge.
And the weird text thing!

It wont work to crop it out. The black line is the cropped image. If you crop it the line just moves with the edge of the crop.

It seems like it affects White Color Solids more than others…

H264 shouldn’t imported to FC, but if its works is OK.
What you shouldn’t do is to render H264 stuff, with all these effects on top, on a H264 time-line.
Change the sequence codec to Prores or whatever.

So when editing a clip that is in H.264 what are the ideal sequence and output settings?

Don’t edit H.264 files.
Convert before import or Transcode on ingest..h264 is an acquisition and delivery format only and not made for editing.

So if I am given H.264 files i should convert them totally before they hit the timeline? What is the fastest way of going about this?

Batch transcode using Compressor. Use one of the ProRes presets (422 or 422 LT, audio pass-through), save yourself some trouble. You can do a quick-and-dirty cut in h.264, but as you can see working with it in any depth is just impossible. And don’t bother trying to use ProRes HQ – even ProRes 422 is usually overkill, because you’re not going to add quality to h.264, it is what it is.
