  • Strange Flicker on Text Layers from Drop Shadow

I am having some trouble with text layers in Final Cut. I’ve got three text layers which animate and reveal all in a stack. When I apply the drop-shadow parameter to them they display some strange shifts and flickers during playback. Remove the dropshadow and everything is fine. This occurs with the Boris text and simple text. Any ideas?

    Thanks

What format are you editing? DV or?

    Jonathon,

I had this EXACT same problem last month, I traced it to FCP’s drop shadow not agreeing with my alpha channel. In my case, I was putting the shadow on some 3D text from Invigorator which has a straight alpha, and before I found it was the FCP shadow at fault, I rerendered my type in every possible way to no avail. With fields, without, premultiplied etc., finally I turned off the dropshadow and the strobing stopped.

Two fixes worked, one was to render the DS along with my text out of AE. The other was to use Boris Continuum Complete’s DS, and I would bet you could use any 3rd party plug and it would probably work.

Note this happened on two different projects, both 8bit SD, the second occurrance on some AE text with glows.

Sorry I should have given some more details. We’re working in SD over an Xsan. The issue seems to be a slight animation in the drop-shadow itself and the numbers of layers. Two layers is okay, three cause the problem. Precomping seems to help but shouldn’t be necessary in my mind. All my elements are created directley within Final Cut. Am I alone in the feeling that FCPs text tools (including Boris 3d) could really use some work?

Are you kidding? EVERYBODY hates the text tools in there, but Title3D ain’t bad.

This has always seemed strange to me as it seems like it should be a simple thing. I find Boris Titler frustrating too. The tab stops never seem to work the way I want them to. Hopefully these issues will be addressed in a future version as it would really help me out a lot.

    Thanks for all the responses.

Now that you mention it, the Boris interface is my least favorite of all, but I do get good quality out of Title 3D.
