Strange Dark Coloration on FCP
Posted by William Edwards on March 14, 2012 at 8:26 pmHello,
I recently color corrected my monitor, and had a BlackMagic Decklink card installed in the MacPro, for DaVinci Resolve. However, now all material played back through FCP has a dark cast to it. When I link back to the source files, everything is fine. There seems to be something in FCP now that’s coloring my quicktime files. Any ideas?

March 14, 2012 at 10:16 pmWhen you play the footage in FCP, and view on the external monitor (which do you have, BTW?) it is darker than when you viewed it with Resolve? Or are you saying in the FCP CANVAS and VIEWER they are dark?

March 14, 2012 at 10:20 pmThe FCP canvas and viewer are dark. I haven’t yet bothered to view it on the external monitor, as I don’t really need to for my needs.

March 14, 2012 at 10:23 pmThe FCP Canvas and Viewer aren’t accurate. To see the actual quality of what you have, you need the external monitor connected via a capture card. If it looks fine on the source files, and in DaVinci…then you are fine. But if you want to make SURE they look right, you need the proper equipment to view the footage right. Otherwise, know that they are fine.

March 14, 2012 at 10:28 pmNo, I think perhaps I wasn’t clear enough. They are unnaturally dark, not even close to how they should look. Something is messing with the color gamma, but only in the viewer and canvas of FCP.

March 14, 2012 at 10:55 pmI used i1Profiler. As I was reading through that thread you linked, I have a computer at home with which this problem did not happen. The LCD at home is a newer Dell Ultrasharp, this one is an older Dell model.

March 15, 2012 at 4:55 amThanks Shane, but this is old DV footage going to a professional NTSC monitor via firewire and a DV camera.
Everything I’m viewing in FCP is darker and more distorted with new aliasing now.
The quality degrades further upon export. -

And do you have the same system/FC/QT version on both computers?
What matt points is an existing issue. From SL on, FC Canvas apply a correction over a system 2.2 gamma that shouldn’t be corrected.
The same happens in QT player when you set “FC Color compatibility”.
FC and QT has no mean to know your display Gamma and keep applying the unnecessary correction.
Having an external monitor that should be your reference.
