strange colour lines on image in FCP
Posted by Marc Lucas on December 21, 2011 at 11:33 pmHad some large Jpeg files that I resized (sized down) in PS to a manageable size for use in FCP. I created both TGA’s and PS files. Whilst resizes the file down further to anymore scale and motion in FCP I have noticed that on some ‘edges’ there is some colour lines along some of the objects i.e down the straight edge of a work surface etc. Its like a banding effect when the image moves. What causes this and can I stop it?

December 22, 2011 at 12:01 amIN the sequence settings, set FIELD DOMINANCE to “None.”
Also, FCP likes PNGs and TIFFs…not PSDs and not TGAs.

December 22, 2011 at 12:03 amSequence is already at ‘none’ I always work in progressive 720p
I usually always work with TGA files and never had any issues before. Could it be the scaling of the images that cause this though? Thanks for the reply

December 22, 2011 at 12:07 amJust tried with both a PNG & TIFF and got the same results. The problem happens when the image is scaled below 60% of the size it was saved in PS

December 22, 2011 at 12:16 am[Marc Lucas] “900×600 to 450×300 approx”
GAH! Don’t do that! You are making the wicked small! 900×600 is fine. Perfect for SD sizes…and kinda small for HD projects. But 450×300 is pretty darn small. You are adding compression artifacts when you do this, and then blowing that up in FCP to fill the window…and so bringing them out more.

December 22, 2011 at 12:19 amSorry didn’t explain fully the image isn’t actually full screen its one of three image boxes that occupy the screen with a small movement. It takes up possible a quarter of the viewer.

December 22, 2011 at 12:29 amWell…it’s pretty low resolution, that might be the reason.

December 22, 2011 at 12:33 amThis is the process I took. The original image in PS was 5000×3999 I used the crop tool to crop three sections from the picture all of the pieces around 900×600 give or take. Those three images were saved as TGA & PSD (I’ll look into using PNGs and TIFF in the future now, thanks!) and brought into FCP. they were then down scaled by 60-70% to fit into the viewer.
