    Hi All,

I am a print designer trying to move into motion graphics and am starting to do spec projects to build a reel. I took a class in college, did a short internship and have done several tutorials, so although I’m not an expert by any means, I have a pretty solid working knowledge of AfterEffects and can figure out most of the technical issues (with the help of you fine folks).

I’m finding that my biggest weakness is in storyboarding/visualizing. Not so much things like typefaces and colors, but more like composition and transitions. Does anybody have any suggestions about what I can do to strengthen these skills? I feel like I’m way out in Right Field on this and think some tips or tutorials or books or anything would help me out a great deal. Are there resources out there, or is it one of those natural-born talent, “If you don’t know now, you’ll never get it” kind of things?

One of my issues, it seems, is knowing when to move from paper to computer. How much do you all sketch out your concepts? How much of the final projects come from computer experimentation? Are there other steps you take to get to the final version?

Seriously, ANYTHING anybody can recommend is greatly appreciated. Sorry for being so long winded.

    Thanks in advance,
    …kevin

I Think like anything in this field, it’s what works best for you. I personally, sketch out my storyboards (very rough)scribble a bunch of notes and refine it until I feel comfortable with the vision. Then move to the computer, knowing that things are going to change once I start working on the final.

My suggestion, watch what others are doing, see how they connect the dots from working with transisions, how one shot works with the next, the thread of the narrative.

Practice and find what works for you

P.S. You may find a few books on storyboarding here

This a good thread. I too would also like to know others creative process in developing a concept and idea. KP there are some excellent strotyboards at https://www.brandnewschool.com/ to get an idea of the process of some big time players in motion graphics.

thanks for the link Jon. i love that they put their boards up there with the projects. it makes such a difference to see how they get to their destination rather than just seeing the final product.

i’ve always been very interested in process, and how project ideas change through different stages. i also find myself constantly asking “how did they do that?” and since it seems like there’s no “right” way, it really interesting to see how differently people approach similar tasks.

    keep ’em comin’!!!!
