Starting on capturing this season’s content and notice how full my drive is getting. I’m looking for a good solution for a storage device to store HDV Video captured in Prores. As of now I have a 2TB Lacie drive which is full, and with the way things are going, I figure I’ll need at least 4 more Terabytes to capture all the video. Don’t want to have a bunch of drives full connected to my system and wanting a single drive location to store all our content. I have read up on Drobo, but seems that’s not fast enough to work off of as well as store HDV Video. I’m looking for a fast raid protected drive or drives that I can store video and work off of in FCP and AE, Any Suggestions? And is it safe to connect another drive via firewire to one which is already connected to the computer (Daisy Chain)?

Look to the left and the right on this page. Very frequent asked question. Caldigit, G-tech, etc…

Expando Chassis SAS/SATA arrays. Run them in RAID 5, get full protection plus around 500MB/s speed or more.

If you need more storage in the future, you simply daisy chain another array. Right now they support up to 128 drives in a chain. We’re running their 16TB unit but I believe they start at 6 or 8TB.

We’ve been running Maxx arrays for over two years now. Our Expando chassis is part of the Final Share system we recently installed. When striped together as one array in RAID 5 it was topping out over 700MB/s. We’ve split it into two 8TB partitions and it’s still clocking in over 500MB/s.

Here’s the full article on Final Share. You do NOT need to have Final Share to run these arrays, they also run as local storage too.
