    Hi,

I just started as an editor for a small production company. They currently have 3 MacPros . One computer is attached by FW800 to 4 external WD hard drives and the other stations are editing over a 100mbps network. We are using a combo of SD and DVCPROHD, however the projects are rather small and they do not need a $25k server solution, however I would like to improve this situation.

My knowledge of setting up a storage solution is pretty theoretical.I’m also a little fuzzy on all the vocabulary. This was my preliminary idea:

Installing Sata drives in the most powerful MacPro and either upgrading the network to 10gb/s ethernet or fibre channel.

    or

An external SATA array and upgrading the network to 10gb/s ethernet or fibre channel.

Any advice, ideas and help would be greatly appreciated on everything to brands to set up options.

Unless you want to invest in a real SAN disk solution, you might consider putting a couple of SATA drives inside each of the three MacPro’s for local storage and use a SATA RAID attached to one of the MacPro’s as semi-SAN solution for others to access over Gigabit ethernet.

It is my impression that doing Firewire chaining of drives is DANGEROUS!

The solution to connect every MacPro to a RAID box via Fiberchannel is REALLY expensive!
